In late April of 2014, a CSX train derailed and destroyed the bridge over the railroad on Cypress Gardens Rd. in Berkeley County. The incident was declared a State of Emergency by Governor Nikki Haley. SCDOT selected four design-build teams within a week, and bid the project within four weeks of the incident. Cape Romain was awarded the project on June 4th, 2014 and issued a Notice To Proceed on June 6th, 2014. The contract time was 140 calendar days, to have the bridge and approach roadways completed, and open to traffic. The detour to the traveling public was approximately 22 miles. Cape Romain mobilized multiple cranes and bridge crews to the site within days, demolished the old bridge within the first ten days of the project, drove piles for new end bents and set new beams across the RR within six weeks of the Notice to Proceed. The project was completed 23 days ahead of schedule and Cape Romain received a substantial incentive for completing the project ahead of schedule. Johnson, Mirmiran and Thompson (JMT) was the structural engineer of record, and S&ME the geotechnical engineer of record, for the design-build team.
